Airbrush Tanning Solutions

All of our solutions are neutral brown.

Each blend comes in a different product depth (DHA percentage) to better match your clients individual skin depth needs (light, medium or dark). The different ingredients within each blend will influence the final tan color of that blend, and how it reacts with your skin.

All Tampa Bay Tan products use carefully selected, naturally sourced ingredients in our products, which may have undergone limited processing. Variations in product bronzer color, clarity, etc. can be expected from lot to lot due to our use of naturally occurring ingredients. Please note that ingredient decks may change from time to time. Ingredients listed here may differ from what is listed on your product package or label. Please refer to product package or label for the most up-to-date ingredients for the product you receive. Info on this site is intended for educational and informational purposes only. Since each individuals skin, body and chemistry is unique, website information is in not intended to make claims or guarantees to any individual experience.

The airbrush tanning solution is a sheer colorant product. The final coloration and tone is a combination of the specific solution ingredients, solution DHA depth, your clients individual skin tone, and the way their skin individually reacts to each ingredient within that blend.

It would be impossible to know which blend will produce the “best” results for you individually, because each of our blends will react uniquely to your skins unique chemistry.

If you are unsure which blend to purchase we recommend you order our Skin Type Promo Package in medium. This allows you to try each of our four blends in medium level. The medium level works best with the largest range of Caucasian skin types to provide the best mix of medium brown color and smooth even fading.

Ordering to dark a solution will not create a browner color. It can create undesirable results. See What DHA concentration should I purchase?

This link will guide you to the best product within OUR line to meet your needs. If you use a 10% or 12% from another company line, that is no guarantee that you will need the same DHA concentration in our line. Many factors within a solution blend will effect the final color, tone and depth, and every solution sold in the Sunless Industry is not identical.

Please remember, choosing a higher DHA% thinking you will be darker or browner does not always work.

Off color development (orange), rapid and uneven fade off, crackled fading, dryness can result.

It is always better to apply a lower concentration product if you are unsure. If your resulting tan is to light after 24 hours, you may reapply a second light coat if needed.

To dark a tan can be difficult to remove.

For best results, when using our equipment, we recommend 2 ounces total per application.
We recommend two coats of one ounce each be applied, back-to-back.
We recommend solution product be used within 90 days of purchase for best freshness and quality.

Products should be stored in a cool dark location with stable low temperatures. Heat or temperature fluctuations, light or air exposure, even for a short time, can cause products to degrade.

For best product shelf life and freshness, refrigeration is always recommended for solution blends.

When stored properly under refrigeration, solutions can maintain freshness and product integrity for up to a year.

Assuming your client has showered and cleansed skin well before dressing, When you see brown “rub off” you are seeing dead skin cells rub off. They are now tanned so you see them. Normally they (dead skin cells) are “clear” or invisible.

You will never, 100%, prevent all dead skin from coming off daily, as they come off every day in the thousands as part of the skins normal growth process. The older the tan, the more will come off. Freshly exfoliated skin will shed less. Your skins individual exfoliation rate also will be a factor.

If you exfoliate well, and shower with a mild cleanser gel soap before dressing, and the tan is very fresh, (a few days after spraying or less) – color transfer will usually be minimal.

A client may have some rub off on tight inner under garments and seam edges, but this is easily removed when garment is dry cleaned. Just advise her to tell the dry cleaner that she wore deodorant and self-tanner, when the garment is turned in for cleaning. This is a common practice, and many women tan before wearing formal wear or bridal dresses.

The clients first, best prevention to minimize any color transfer – is to make sure skin is well exfoliated, and lotion and product free before you spray them. This includes removal of exfoliation scrub residue, soap residue etc.

Make sure she comes to you with clean, product free skin.

You may use a prep spray to help remove any sweat or lotion from skin. Our CYA prep spray is available in our PRE/POST TAN CARE link under SHOPPING SHORTCUTS

Do not over apply solution, apply normal amounts, and have client shower at 8 hours -12 hours

Tell client NOT to apply a heavy moisturizer under tight clothing areas, before dressing for her event, as some lotions can build up on skin, and “roll” or peel off, especially when sweating in tight clothing, this can also cause more tinted skin cells to peel away and transfer to clothing.

Have client apply a body powder or baby powder to all skin inside her bridal undergarments before dressing to help products slide easily over skin and minimize skin drag and pull. Use a large powder brush to apply.

Some tan facilities like to use a clear/non tinted product on brides. This prevents any cosmetic bronzer tint from being placed on the skin, as some clients find they personally have more rub off from a tinted product vs. non tinted.

This usually this is not necessary, just a personal preference, and we have many of our blends that can be purchased in a clear untinted formula. So you may try this option if you are comfortable spraying a clear untinted product.

Keep in mind models for runway shows and photo shoots (even in bridal magazines and live event shows) are all sprayed with a tinted spray tanner and bronzer, as well as body makeup if needed, before they dress in the very very expensive designer and bridal garments. Any color transfer is usually minimal and inside the garments, and easily cleaned away with professional cleaning.

All Tampa Bay Tan spray tan solutions are Gluten free
We blend our solutions once or twice a week (or sooner) using our in house labs and blending staff. Solution is never older then seven days when shipped out.

We recommend refrigeration of all solution blends for best longterm storage and freshness. If products are stored at room temperature they should be used within 90 days of your purchase date.

Heat, temperature changes, air exposure can all shorten product shelf life.

Before spraying a pregnant or breast feeding client, we always recommend you receive approval from the client’s medical caregiver first.

You may not be aware of individual concerns specific to your clients health needs.

For your peace of mind, always use nasal filters and adequate ventilation, eye protection, and lip balm or barrier cream on lip surfaces, and protective undergarments with pregnant or lactating clients.

All of the ingredients used in all of our products have been tested, approved and rated as appropriate for cosmetic use, by the appropriate regulation agencies in the USA and Europe.

All of our products are approved for worldwide use, and importation, and meet all safety and formulation requirements necessary for standard cosmetic use and importation.

We use certified organic DHA in products, and use other natural and or organic, ingredients when available. All products are paraben free.

Dihydroxyacetone or DHA has recently been reviewed by the European Commission’s independent expert scientific committee (the SCCS), which advises the Commission on scientific matters, and the safety of cosmetic ingredients. The SCCS looked at data to support the use of DHA in cosmetic formulations.

The SCCS addressed the question of the product possibly being inhaled from self-tan sprays, and says “that the use of dihydroxyacetone as a self-tanning ingredient will not pose a risk to the health of the consumer”. This was based on formulas up to the DHA 14% level in consumer application and booths.

As well as this endorsement on the safety of DHA itself from the SCCS, it is important to stress that in Europe and in the USA the manufacture and import of all cosmetic products are covered by strict safety laws. There is a legal requirement that every cosmetic product must undergo a safety assessment before it is placed on the market.

Self-tanning agents, and all other ingredients used in our products, have not been contraindicated for use with pregnant or lactating clients as a skin application product, because they do not appear to penetrate past the dead skin cell surface layer, nor into live tissues or the blood stream. Or if so, only in very minute amounts.

There have been no indications that self tanners are unsafe for clients or their children when used in a correct manner. Self tanning ingredients have been used in the consumer market since the early 1960’s – with a long and safe historical use.

But inhalation issues should be a consideration, especially with breastfeeding, pregnancy, or clients with any type of respiratory concerns.

Some individual medical caregivers prefer not to use skin care products, hair dyes, and cosmetics within the first trimester, as a simple “better safe then sorry approach”, even though no specific problem has been documented.

Current FDA suggested use recommends the use of nasal filters, lip protection, eye protection, and protective undergarments for all clients.

Products should be stored in a cool dark location with stable low temperatures. Heat or temperature fluctuations, light or air exposure, even for a short time, can cause products to degrade.

For best product shelf life and freshness, refrigeration is always recommended for solution blends. For best quality, we recommend you use entire product within three months.

When stored properly under refrigeration, solutions can maintain freshness and product integrity for up to a year.

Blotchy tan appearance of solution as soon as it hits the skin surface is usually caused by any of the following:

applying to much product to skin, Use only one oz per coat, and apply two thin coats; as first dries, immediately apply second coat. (for 2 ounces total coverage with two coats)

spraying over the same “wet” area. Spraying wet solution on a wet solution layer, can cause runs or beads and blots. In the same manner applying a coat of wet paint over a previous wet layer of paint, prevents fresh paint coat from sticking to the surface below, and can cause drips. Instead apply one fine thin solution coat, (1 oz) letting dry briefly, then a second fine coat. Generally as soon as you spray one coat of solution over entire body, head to toe, front and back, skin has dried enough to allow second one oz layer to be applied immediately.

Do not go back and forth over the same area repeatedly, excess saturation is not necessary.

Not moving gun quick enough while spraying, entire two coat session should take 5 min or less.

spraying to close to the skin surface, spray gun should be 4 inches from the skin, measure to confirm distance skin may have sweat, lotion, oil, hair conditioner, soap or other residue on it. (use C.Y.A. prep product if needed)

Skin is poorly exfoliated Change exfoliation method if needed.

If only blotchy in some areas, are they dry skin areas? If so, they should be well exfoliated, and pre moisturized.

High heat or humidity in the spray area causing client to sweat during application. Adjust temperature, or use dehumidifier in spray room in humid locations

Blotchiness or cracking after a few days is related to Tan Wear and fade

Review how client is exfoliating, and products used on skin. Change exfoliation method if needed.

Confirm client is moisturizing skin as needed, and avoiding drying skincare products.

To dark a product or to high a DHA level for clients skin, can cause blotchiness and poor fade. Change to a lighter DHA depth, a lighter product, and or advise client to shower product off sooner. (4-6 hours instead or 8-12 for example)

Seasonal changes such as lowered humidity, use of central heat and air, and body changes such as medication, lifestyle changes, hormonal changes, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause can all alter the skins ability to hold and maintain moisture creating dryer skin.

Adjust to a more moisturizing product for this client such as Tan Extraordinaire or Revive

The bronze and clear solutions both are the same solution blend, both bronze and clear will provide a waterproof sunless tan, after showering.

The bronze product has a temporary water soluble cosmetic brown tint added to the product to allow the solution to be visible on the skin surface while spraying. This temporary tint will wash away in the first shower, leaving the sunless tan behind.

The clear product is the same solution blend, without the temporary brown tint. It comes out of the bottle with a milky white clear color. It is not easily visible on the skin while spraying.

With some of our blends, depending on clients skin reaction, the bronze tinted version will tweak the color, and the resulting final tan color maybe be slightly different, or darker, then the clear version.

Clear products may be used in the following cases:

Clients who may be sensitive to tint additive ingredients

Clients with skin problem areas that over darken from the tint (skin tags, moles, spots, very dry skin, very wrinkled skin, enlarged pores, acne scabs, dry scabbed areas from skin disease conditions

Clients who tan during lunch hour from work, and do not want to return to work looking visibly brown

Clients with fine line areas where the tint “collects” (usually seen on face, neck, or hands)

Prom or bridal parties, to minimize solution rub on snug inner garment surfaces (the excess color will wash away with dry cleaning or laundering)

Client who have tan rub off after showering, even with very good exfoliation to product free skin

You can use a tinted product on the body, and switch to a clear for facial use.

Orange is most often caused by:

Using to dark a solution depth for that clients skin tone needs (only use the correct DHA percent based on that clients skin type, and “our” recommended depth list for our blends. If unsure which level, go lighter). Every companies line is different.
Applying too much product (using our equipment and solution, you should only apply 2 ozs per client. Two 1 oz coats)
Poor exfoliation (exfoliate well with nylon mesh gloves and mild plain non moisturizing shower gel. Many exfoliation scrubs, and bars can leave residue on the skin) Exfoliation tips HERE
Very dry skin (use a lighter product, and/or premoisterize the skin with our Moist Aire spray)
Leaving airbrush tanning solution product on the skin to long for that client (for best color depth, shower at 8-12 hours, but if this is to dark for your client, advise them to shower at 4 or 6 hours for lighter color. Rapid Tan should not be left on longer then 6 hours, or less depending on skintype)

All of our solutions are brown. Each blend comes in a different product depth (DHA percentage) so you can best match your clients individual skin depth needs. The different ingredients within each blend will influence the final color and tone of that blend, based on that client, and how it reacts with their skin. Not every blend will be identical in color and depth to another blend in our line.

The airbrush tanning solution is a sheer colorant product. The final coloration and tone is from a combination of the specific solution ingredients, solution DHA depth, your clients individual skin tone, and the way their skin individually reacts to each ingredient within that blend.

The solutions do not need any mixing. The formulas are ready to spray right from the bottle.

For best product performance we do not recommend you mix anything with our solutions.

You should not warm solution by placing it in warm or hot water or by microwaving it. Adding heat of any type will degrade the solution, and lessen the products ability to tan the skin.

You can place a small amount of solution onto a counter (the amount you will use) a few hours before spraying to allow it to drop to room temperature.

However the spray equipment blows air to disperse the solution, air blowing onto wet skin, causes evaporation, which causes a cooling effect. There is little you can do to prevent that.

We recommend you run your equipment before use to allow it to warm up, which can make the air blowing out of the unit feel warmer. We also recommend a small portable heather in the immediate spray area, and possibly a tent to lessen drafts. Warm the immediate spray area up very warm, but do not cause the client to sweat.

Give the client a hand held blow dryer on warm setting to blow dry skin after application. Or use a space heater that blows warm air into the room.

Your tan may look different in unusual lighting conditions.

Photographs are a 2D image, and the lighting and coloring is often perceived by the eye differently, than what one sees in real life, which is 3D. It is not unusual for pale untanned skin, UV Tanned skin, and Sunless Tanned skin to look different or “off color” in photographs. Professional photographs in magazines are retouched and adjusted after development to compensate for skin tonality and color. The Playboy girls really do not look like those photos. :)

Florescent lights do not correctly reflect the entire color range back to the eye. Often colors will look off. This is related to the type of light spectrum florescent lighting emits. Using “Real Tone” spectrum bulbs can help to a limited extent.

Cloudy or overcast days effect the visible color spectrum in relation to the way light and colors impact the eye. This will affect the way the eye perceives color, tone, and depth.

Sometimes applying a lower percentage DHA can help compensates for these color variances.

Please use nose filters and appropriate ventilation as needed, and obtain a Doctors written approval before spraying these clients.

Per current general FDA recommendations, clients and technicians should be provided with/use adequate ventilation, nose filters, lip balm products (or barrier cream used as a balm) to protect lips, protective undergarments and protective eye wear.

If you have a known sensitivity to an ingredient in a product, that product should not be used, and your medical provider consulted.

Normally the solution is not damaged by freezing.

Please thaw solution on the counter, indoors at a normal room temperature. Shake after product is completely thawed. Solution integrity should not be effected.

DO NOT USE HEAT OF ANY TYPE OR A MICROWAVE OVEN TO THAW!

Heat and microwaving WILL damage solution product.

This is a quick guide to our Airbrush Tanning Solution blends. Please review each product page for more specific details.

We always recommend one purchase a sample package or small bottle of a blend to test on yourself before applying to your clients.

We do not provide refunds on solution products, please choose correctly when ordering.

Need a recommendation for the correct solutions to provide the best most natural looking (non-orange) color for your skin type?
See What DHA Concentration should I purchase.

There is no one “best” product to use in this situation.

It depends on which ingredient(s) your client is reacting to.

People with ingredient sensitivities can react to a number of different ingredients, or ingredient families; and every person will not react to the same ingredients.

Some people (though rare) may react to Aloe Vera, for example. This is a common, soothing recognized gentle extract, safe to use even on irritated and abraded skin. And is used to treat skin irritations, and wounds. It is not considered irritating. But any product containing Aloe can be a problem for this client.

A client with latex sensitivities may also react to avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwifruit, passion fruit, plum, strawberry and tomato fruits. Those who react to Ragweed, may also react to Chamomile, and Daisy plant family extracts

Some people may be sensitive to DHA also known as Dihydroxyacetone, which is the plant based ingredient used in all Self Tanners to produce the brown skin tint. So for those clients, every self tanner currently on the market, could be a problem for them.

We create all of our products using known dermatologist approved, non reactive, non-sensitizing, skin friendly ingredients. But because of the wide variety of unique skin concerns, it would be impossible to guarantee any product may not cause a reaction in someone.
A medical care provider will best be able to assist them in this process to help pinpoint exactly which ingredient, or ingredient families they will need to avoid. So for any sensitivity reaction, always advise your client to speak with a medical profession, to best asses their situation first.

You will then need to work together with your client, and their physician to understand what ingredients they are reactive to, and to best guide them in appropriate product selection. A client may be sensitive to more than one ingredient, or more than one type of ingredient.
For your convenience, all of our ingredients are listed clearly on each product label.

We provide solution blends in Bronze/tinted or clear versions to better assist customers with colorant related sensitivities.

Tan Extraordinaire Airbrush Tanning Solution is a fragrance free, Food Grade Dye Free, product. This works for clients with fragrance or dye concerns. Though if they are sensitive to the plant extracts in this blend, they should not use it.

Some solutions in our line can be order unfragranced by special request. These are good choices for clients with fragrance related sensitivities.

For clients with concerns, apply a quarter sized patch of tanning solution behind clients ear, and back knee bend, and or elbow bend. Monitor for 24 hours to test for a possible reaction.

If you have a known sensitivity to an ingredient used in one of our products, please do not use that product.

An airbrush applied sunless tan is made up of two colorant agents. The temporary brown instant visible tint, you see when the product is first sprayed onto the skin, and the slower developing, longer wearing DHA based tint.

The cosmetic brown color you see when airbrush tanning solution is first applied to the skin is a temporary water soluble brown tint. This will wash away in the first shower. This is normal, this is NOT your sunless tan.

This will leave the more permanent DHA based sunless tan behind, which will last through normal daily activity. This takes 2- 8 hours to develop color, and can darken for up to 24 hours. Color will last for 5-7 days depending on your skins exfoliation rate, your skin care habits and lifestyle.

If you exfoliate skin well before tanning, and apply airbrush tanning solution to clean dry product free skin, then shower before sweating or activity, you tan will not sweat off. We recommend a pair of nylon mesh exfoliation gloves and a mild non moisturizing gel cleanser for exfoliation. Many exfoliation scrubs can leave a moisturizing coating on the skin which can cause tan to apply unevenly, rub off of fade faster.

Regular moisturizing will enable your tan to fade slower. We offer a range of post tan moisturizing products.
Heavy exercise, sweating, or swimming may cause a tan to fade faster, just reapply tanning solution more often, or use our Tan Therape extending lotion to help rebuild faded color as needed.

To lessen tan fade from swimming, limit swimming sessions to shorter ones of 15 minutes or so, rather then a long soak. Pat skin dry upon exiting, rather then “rubbing”. A freshly applied sunless tan, applied to well exfoliated skin, will fade less then an older tan of a few days or more, or one applied to poorly exfoliated skin.

If fade is a concern, apply a light depth tan, so if there is fade, it will be less visible.

A thick waterproof lotion based sunscreen can help slow tan fade and wear related to water submersion from prolonged swimming.

Beading and/or dripping (runs) of solution once it hits the skin surface are usually caused by any of the following:

applying to much product to skin, Use only one oz per coat, and apply two thin coats; as first dries, immediately apply second coat. (for 2 ounces total coverage with two coats)

spraying over the same “wet” area. Spraying wet solution on a wet solution layer, can cause runs or beads.

Watch our application video HERE

spraying to close to the skin surface, spray gun should be 4 inches from the skin, measure to confirm distance

skin has sweat, lotion, oil, hair conditioner, soap or other residue on it. (use C.Y.A. prep product if needed) Change exfoliation method if needed. Click HERE
